In a  new article in Scientific American, 'Can Extreme Poverty Be Eliminated?', Director of the Earth Institute Jeffrey Sachs argues that although market economics and globalization are lifting the bulk of humanity out of extreme poverty, special measures are needed to help the poorest of the poor.

He includes the cartogram developed by CPRC for its Chronic Poverty Report 2004-05 to show the countries with the largest numbers of chronically poor people and those with the highest proportions of chronically poor people.
