CPRC Cross-Cutting Research Themes
Gender
About the Gender theme
Analysis of gender in our existing work (see matrix) indicates that it is widely considered within much of our research. However, aware of the limitations of mainstreaming gender in research, policy and practice, our intention is to ensure that specific gender issues are more keenly examined in relation to policy. As far as we can we will relate this to demand driven policy analysis so that a ready audience of users can take up our work.
The objective for the CPRC gender analysis is to better understand the relationship between gender and chronic poverty and thus to develop ideas for enhanced solutions to chronic poverty embedded through gender dynamics. We will also pay particular attention to the intersectionality between gender and age, given the relational nature of women, children and young people’s poverty and vulnerability.
The gendered impact of the current recession is an area we will investigate, also considering life course issues. Change is also likely to emanate from the following areas, all of which have strong gender dimensions in both trapping the poor in poverty and in seeking solutions:
- Politics and gender equality
- Enhanced efficacy of gender informed social movements.
- Enhanced asset ownership, including inheritance concerns
- Enhanced opportunities for young people, including educational quality
- Enhanced reproductive health status
- Gender sensitive social protection
